How To Prevent Blisters When Running

By Joel Getty

Blisters are one of the easiest running injuries to get and the longer you run (ie. marathon), the more likely you are to get blisters. But you don't have to suffer while running if you follow these simple steps.

Things You'll Need Before You Run

  • Running shoes
  • Running socks
  • Natural Lubricant Like BodyGlide

Get The Right Running Shoes

Get fit by a specialist with the proper specialty running shoes. They must be comfortable, stable, and well broken in before doing serious running mileage. Blisters are often burns caused by the friction of your feet inside of you shoes, so eliminating hot spots is the key.  Read more about How to Select Running Shoes.

Get The Right Socks

Wear specialty running socks. Running socks should be made of synthetic fibers (cotton is notorious for causing blisters), should fit snugly, and be highly breathable. Loose socks, and sweaty socks can create unwanted hot spots and chaffing.

Use Anti-Chaffing Lubricants

Use a vegetable based lubricant. Avoid petroleum jelly and other petroleum based lubricants that can actually heat up with friction while running. Vegetable based lubricants like Bodyglide are awesome for any chaffing. Even vegetable shortening (Crisco) can be used in a pinch and is very inexpensive.

Get Out There And Run!

Final Tips

  • Triathletes can avoid blisters while speeding up transitions by running without socks, but don't forget the Bodyglide!
  • Some running socks are double layered for extra protection against blisters.

Other Warnings

  • Don't wear cotton socks.
  • Don't use too much lubricant or you will be sliding all around inside your shoes.
  • Consult your physician before starting any running program or physical activity.
